German firm to set up floating solar system in Zimbabwe

A Germany based company, Droege Energy is set to establish a floating solar system worth $30 million at Lake Mutirikwi in Masvingo that will assist in the generation of 10 megawatts of electricity.

Droege Energy CEO, Gustavo Droege said they would like to carry out a solar pilot project which will see the company generating 10 megawatts of electricity at Mutirikwi dam.

He explained that they will be using floating panels and upon reaching an agreement with the Zimbabwe government, it will take them 3 months to complete the project.

“We would like to start with 10 megawatts as a pilot project for Zimbabwe,” he said.

Masvingo Mayor, Councilor Collin Maboke and the Minister of State for Masvingo Province, Cde Ezra Chadzamira concurred that the project of this nature will go a long way in augmenting power supplies in the province.

An improvement in the supply of power will not only assist industries but will enable irrigation projects to get sufficient energy supply.
